Our story is about a marriage…

We make pottery because we love making pottery together. The rhythm of turning lumps of raw clay and bags of raw minerals into useful and beautiful kitchen ware is enormously satisfying.

Our love affair with pottery is about a relationship—a relationship between wife and husband. Darrell is the dreamer and Alison is the doer. In 2011, Darrell had a dream and signed Alison up for pottery class without her knowing it. She was dragged in, but once in she was all in. And when she was in, Alison’s dogged doing brought success to an otherwise doomed venture.

Both of us worked to outpace the other in our pottery throwing skills. Then we bought a kiln and a wheel. Alison feared that the investment would be a failure, and this fear propelled her to log hours on hours at the wheel. Successful wheel throwing is no small feat. It is easy to throw a beginner’s pot. But throwing a good one that is well-balanced and has consistent wall thickness is another story.

Darrell, after a reckoning with reality, decided to stop competing against the superior throwing skills of his wife and turned to the technical challenge of glaze formulation. Much trial and error landed us with our white, brown, and blue glazes.

We both play an essential role in this craft. Alison is the maker of the pots. Darrell makes the glazes and keeps the kiln working.  Every pot showcases this marriage of clay and glaze.
